Since 2008, DBCFSN has operated D-Town Farm, the largest of Detroit's many gardens and farms. The farm occupies slightly more than seven acres inside the Meyers Tree Nursery in the City of Detroit's Rouge Park. D-Town Farm is maintained by a small staff and volunteers who grow more than 30 different fruits, vegetables and herbs each year using sustainable, regenerative methods.
At D-Town Farm, we use three hoop houses for extending the growing season, do large scale composting, rainwater retention, solar energy generation and bee-keeping. The farm maintains a children's area with a small playscape and a clay pizza oven. Each month between May - September the farm sponsors public events for children and families. Community building is an important part of the farm's mission.
At D-Town Farm, we train new growers each year through formal internships (when funding allows) and informally through weekend volunteer opportunities. The farm is open to volunteers on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. - noon and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. - noon from March - November. Volunteer opportunities for groups can be scheduled during the week also, but must be pre-arranged with our office. Information on our Volunteer Incentive Program can be obtained by contacting our office.
From June - October, D-Town Farm produce can be purchased on Saturday and Sunday mornings at the farm, on Wednesdays at the Wayne State University Farmers Market and on the second and fourth Saturdays at the Market on the Ave (Livernois at Florence). Wholesale discounts are available to stores, caterers and restaurants.
Farm tours can be arranged for youth groups, community organizations, faith-based institutions, schools, and other groups. The recommended donation for tours is $3.00/ child and $5.00/adult. No one will be turned away because of lack of ability to pay.
D-Town Farm is located at 14027 W. Outer Drive, (between Plymouth and W. Chicago) Detroit MI, 48239.
