20 YEARS OF BUILDING BLACK FOOD SOVEREIGNTY

“Bridging the difference within and beyond Blackness is a big challenge. That is why we focus heavily on political education and healing. Inter and intra racial healing is crucial to our work because everyone has absorbed several traumas over centuries that has caused us to show up in ways that are so harmful to one another. The lateral violence that is in our communities can be so overwhelming... the healing that has to happen so we can unlearn and relearn has been intense. It’s challenging and it's also very rewarding to see and feel healing in action.”

WHAT IS BLACK
FOOD SOVEREIGNTY?

Black food sovereignty is the right of people of African descent to access healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods, and their right to define their own food and agriculture systems. Food sovereignty is, therefore, a holistic, healthy and sustainable approach for communities to address chronic food insecurity.
