Freedom Village
Garden Initiative

Community Collaboration...

The Freedom Village Garden Initiative is focused on providing garden resources to the Detroit Black Community. The initiative is the result of a collaboration between Detroit Black Community Food Security Network and Alkebu-lan Village. DBCFSN brings expertise in farming operations, gardening, and soil selection. Alkebu-lan Village focuses on youth development and community service; youth participants in their program build the raised beds. This is the second year these two organizations have joined forces to provide these garden resources to the Detroit Black Community.

We provide 4' x 4' raised beds along with scouting services to assist new gardeners to find the best location for their garden, delivery, installation, compost, non-gmo seeds, and opportunities to continue learning about growing food at home. This is our offering toward Black food sovereignty through collective work and responsibility (Ujima). This year, we will build and deliver 100 garden beds beginning April 26, 2021.
